Had a walk today in the evening and stopped like frozen (could have been literary seeing that it was almost -15°C) to watch how the smoke from the coal powerplant Siekierki was beautifully backlit by the full moon. Unfortunately I did not have my camera, and the phone picture above does not to it justice.

Chopin by Night

Last evening as I passed Łazienki there was a nice full moon just over the Chopin monument. Unfortunately the park closes at sunset and the gates were locked. As I was standing trying to get a nice image through the grills of the gate a guard came from outside. His colleague on the inside opened the gate and let him in. I asked if I could just quickly run over to the statue to take a photo. "No way", barked the guard who was being relieved and attached the padlock. The other guard waited a minute, then opened the gate and said "Just close it when you leave".

I'm a little miffed at over-exposing the moon so severely, but Jupiter is nicely visible at the top of the image.

Yellow city

Warsaw this autumn is truly a yellow city. Not only for the normal yellow leaves of the "golden Polish autumn", but also because of all the signs providing help around constructions sites. With the construction of the new metro-line much of central Warsaw seem to be dug up and driving is even more of a challenge than usually.

A village called Warsaw

Warsaw has these strange areas looking very much like far out in the countryside when in fact it's close to the centre of the capital. This building is a testament to how bad I am exploring my surroundings - it's just a few kilometres from home and I passed the building in the background numerous times. Behind my back is a small field of crops.

Wooden church in fall

I was visiting Łochów Palace recently. We are arranging a conference there in Noveber so we needed to see the place and plan for the events. On the palace (but it's actually more of a mansion than a palace) grounds they have this wooden church. It was very nicely framed by the yellow autumn leaves.

I took this picture early this year from the Siekierkowski bridge over the river Wisla just south of central Warsaw. Since there are almost no mountains or hills around Warsaw it's hard to find a spot to get a clear view of the skyline.

This is a shot of the balconies of a building in Warsaw. The apartment block is locked in behind a fence and on the parking are only diplomatic cars from Russia. Seems diplomatic life is not always so glamorous, especially if you don't belong to the higher levels of the hierarchy. The building with these balconies lies just next to this abandoned apartment complex rumoured to belong to the Russians. Maybe the rumour is true.

On the Praga side of the river in Warsaw one can find a few beaches along the Vistula. This is Praska Plaża. It seems like a little oasis in the city, but bathing is probably not recommended.

A collage of women with wreaths (wianki) on the eve of St. John. The wreaths are later thrown in the river by the unmarried girls in the hope that it is picked up by the future husband. Like the Swedish midsommarafton the celebration dates back to pre-Christian times. However, in Poland the church has been more successful than in Sweden to associate the old pagan celebration of the summer solstice with St. John the Baptist. The church was mercifully absent from the celebrations last night though, which centered more around drinking and having fun than being pious.

Fountains and people

Yesterday we went to see the newly inaugurated fountains below the royal palace in Warsaw. We were not alone... There has been much talk about the fountains in the last year - how much they cost; how many trees were removed to make space for them; and after the opening - how great the show is. So, every Friday and Saturday there are a number of 20 minute multimedia-shows at the fountains. We came there not expecting such a crowd. From our point of view we could not see anything of the light-show. But I got some good pictures of the crowd photographing the show.
Btw, the show is (of course) on YouTube, and it looks amazing. I need to go and actually see it some day.

Cycling i Warsaw

Even though conditions for bicycling in Warsaw is slowly improving - new bicycle paths are built, recently the rules were changed to make it easier to follow them - every now and then you see these things that are typical of the attitude towards cyclists. We are not really important, and those who plan cyclepaths have no clue about cycling themselves.

Today's photo was taken in Kraków about a week ago. I was there for a conference and was sitting in my hotelroom in the evening, working (really!) when I happened to look out and saw this man cleaning the chimneys opposite the hotel. Against the setting sun he was just a silhouette, and I took a couple of pictures when he was working. When he had packed his gear, out of sight from me, he lit a cigarette and walked off. I managed to catch this image. If you want to see him working a photo like that is on Flickr.

Three weeks later

Book café

If asked, many Warsovians will name Czuły Barbarzyńca as their favourite book store. However, I think it should be called favourite café instead. During 45 minutes sitting, I did not see a single person actually buying a book. Many browsed, had coffee, cake, talked and left... including me*. So a more accurate description I think is a café that also sells books.

* Although I have the excuse that they don't sell foreign language books.

Today there was a climbing competition at the wall where I normally climb. It was an open competition with 7 routes in grades from 5a to 7c. I fell out at level 6b/c, but took some pictures of the event. Some of them are at my Flickr page.

Yesterday was spring equinox, or first day of spring as they say in Poland. In Sweden the start of spring was generally celebrates in the end of April. Today the weather caught up with calendar as well - we had a pleasant 12 degress and sun - far from the wintery 3 with rain and wind we had during the weekend.
These buds are on the tree outside my window. The photo was taken testing my new 1.4x extender for the zoom lens.

The boring people

At the Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw I saw this very plain painting. Turns out the artist made a poll where a number of people answered a questionnaire about their art preferences. Then the artist (whose name I unfortunately forgot) made a painting matching those answers. Nice idea - good art - boring painting... but of course in this case the painting itself is not the art.

Most Gdański

A couple of days ago I was out in the evening to take pictures of the tram tracks on Most Gdański, a cool truss bridge across the Vistula in Warsaw. The temperature was about -12°C, but with the strong wind on the river it felt much, much colder. My bicycle gloves, which are fine while moving, were completely inadequate for standing still taking pictures.

However, I was apparently not alone taking photos there, though I didn't even see the guys in the picture above until I came home and looked at the picture on the screen.
I also wanted to test my new tripod by taking some long exposure shots of the illuminated Most Śląsko-Dąbrowski. That turned into a fiasco when I realised how much the bridge was moving due to the heavy trucks, trams and buses...

I had to increase the ISO a lot and time the photo to the trams to manage to get a decent picture.

Ferrofluid

A colleague and I spent some time playing around in the lab with a ferrofluid and a strong neodymium magnet. And a camera, of course. Ferrofluids are supercool and look almost unreal. A few more pictures can be found in my gallery here, and loads of them on Flickr - many a lot better than mine.

With the magnet closer the spikes become smaller and denser. The curve hexagonal pattern of light dots in the lower part comes from light scattered off the tips of out-of-focus spikes. The spikes form a hexagonal pattern on the surface as clearly seen below.

I didn't have a green lamp, so the colour comes from shining a white lamp through a solution of nickel salt.

Polish quality roads

I often complain about the traffic in Poland, which is dreadful. However, the roads are in similar class. This is not a village road out in the country, but in the centre of the capital. Unfortunately this state of roads is not uncommon after a hard winter. And when spring comes it is patched together and makes a horrible surface for driving or bicycling. No wonder most Warsovian cyclist have mountainbikes, even if the city is flat as a table.

One thing that is definitely not hard to find in Warsaw is churches. Anywhere in the city you cannot walk for five minutes without stumbling over one. This large church is less than a kilometer away from this monstrosity.

A sample is beeing annealed in a ceramic boat in a quartz tube furnace. The temperature is 900°C and the colour is (close to) natural blackbody radiation.

The weather has been miserable recently and I haven't felt like taking the camera out for a walk. The next couple of days you'll have to make do with some pictures from the lab.

On the way to work I took a few pictures of the people hurrying through the rain to work. It's the days that makes me think about Tom Waits song November... Graves at the cemetery in Sadyba

The local cemetery in Sadyba is quite small, but very densly "populated", if that word is allowed. This picture was taken with a tele-lens standing on the wall surrounding the cemetery. It was inspired in part by Andreas Feininger's amazing "Masses of tombstones in cemetery in Queens." (below) Of course the cemetery in Sadyba is tiny compared to the one in that photo. And I also did not have a 40-inch objective available...*

*BTW I don't think running around on roof-tops in NY with that camera post-9/11 is a good idea...

Gold particles

A picture from work. This shows dendrites of gold nanoparticles. The tree-like structures were formed when a homogeneous layer of nanoparticles were moved by the surface tension of an evaporating liquid. The picture was taken using dark field microscopy in polarised light. The shiny part up in the left corner are crystals of KCl. The whole image is about 1 mm across.

Żelazowa Wola

This weekend we went to see the newly renovated birth-house of Frederyk Chopin in Żelazowa Wola just outside Warsaw. The park is very nice, as is the new visitors centre and resturant. However, it's a bit empty... especially the house itself, in the picture.

Electrode cleaning

One of the more boring things to do in electrochemistry is cleaning electrodes. With gold and glassy carbon electrode it means polishing a long long time. A platinum counter electrode is easier; you just burn off the dirt. Above cobalt, and below sodium from salt probably after touching it with the fingers.

Opposite the street from my work is the old Warsaw gasworks - Gazownia Warszawska. In an overgrown corner of the area are two large gasholders - now in ruins - made from red bricks. They are just the coolest things. This picture was taken at sunset, adding an orange glow to the building.

Just outside Vienna there is a nice forest area around Martinsberg. There one can find the restaurant Waldschenke. It's a very cosy restaurant with a nice garden, that was too cold to use now, and rustique food from the neighbouring farms and wineyards.

Stalin's church?

Today's picture shows the construction of the Świątynia Opatrzności Bożej (Temple of Divine Providence) close to Wilanów. The church, or temple, is monstrously huge and ugly. On Google images one can find plenty of horrific images of how the finished church will look. With the newly built avenue leading up to the church I can't help to think about another building that was forced onto the Warsovians by another totalitarian institution:

Second metro line

They have started building the second metro line now in Warsaw. That means lots of closed road and general chaos in the traffic. A plus is that the traffic situation has become so bad that more people have started using buses instead of one person in each car.

During the time sailing we saw this lovely mirage on the horizon. The water temperature at the time was over 25 degrees, and after a sudden rain the air was much cooler. This resulted in a mirage similar to the ones seen on hot road in the summer.

Today is a classic image from the Mazury, the lake district in north-eastern Poland. Next week we are going for the most Polish of holidays* - a week on a yacht in Mazury. So, don't expect an update next week.

Picture of the day is the rather dreary façade of the CePeLek, the military medical clinic in central Warsaw. If you see a building like this in Warsaw it's almost always some kind of state or city authority that own it.

Åstol

Here is a seriously overexposed image of the island Åstol off the Swedish west coast. The picture was meant to be part of a HDR set, but the way the HDR came out didn't appeal to me. However, I like this a lot. It only required a little bit of postprocessing to bring out the colours of the island as a contrast against the white sky and the bright sea.

A little meta: I tried to keep this blog first in Swedish, then in both Swedish and English, but from now on it will be in English only. Almost all Swedes I know understand English, and very few non-Swedes do. A google-translate button is added to the right if you need it. I will also try to update this blog a little more frequently. The goal is every Tuesday and Friday with occational in-betweens.

I närheten av mitt hem ligger de här gamla lägenhetstornen. Väldigt fint invid en park. Fast helt tomma. Rykten gör gällande att de en gång huserade personal vid den närliggande ryska ambassaden. Efter Sovjetunionens fall och Warszawapaktens upplösning behövdes inte så mycket personal längre... Jag vet inte om det är sant.

Dagens bild är ett foto på en liten tjej som dansade fram på en av skogsvägarna i skogsområdet Las Kabaty som ligger precis brevid kulturparken Powsin. Den här bilden togs fem minuter innan vi alla såg ut som dränkta katter efter en plötslig våldsam åskskur.

Today's picture show a little girl dancing along one of the forest roads in the Las Kabaty area just next to the Puwsin culture park. The picture was taken five minutes before we all got soaked by a sudden heavy rain-shower.

Noc muzeów

I söndags var det Noc museów här i Warszawa. De flesta av stadens museer var öppna till efter midnatt, och gratis inträde var det överallt. Warszawaborna passade på! Låååånga köer, ibland runt hela kvarter, avskräckte utanför de flesta entréerna. Efter att mest kollat in folk halkade vi till slut in på det pyttelilla Muzeum farmacji (Farmacevtiska museet).

Last Sunday was Noc museów here in Warsaw. Most of the city's museums were open until after midnight, and free entry everywhere. The Warsaw residents took the opportunity! Looong queues, sometimes around the whole block acted as a deterrant outside most entrances. After mosly bumbling around looking at people we finally stumbled upon the tiny Muzeum farmacji (Pharmaceutical museum).

Idag var det verkligen vår i luften i här i Warszawa; sol, blå himmel, vindstilla och 20 grader varmt. De senaste veckorna har träden formligen exploderat i gröna skott och vårblommorna är välkomna färgklickar efter den långa vintern.
Har börjat leka med att ta bilder med iPhone och den roliga appen Hipstamatic. Omedelbara, fulsnygga bilder. Men då man inte kan beskära bilderna efteråt (ramen kring fotot hindrar det) behöver man fundera lite mer på att hitta rätt vinkel. Inte alltid en nackdel.

Today it was a feeling of spring here in Warsaw; sun, blue skies, no wind and 20 degrees Celsius. In recent weeks, the trees virtually exploded with green shoots and the spring flowers are welcome splashes of colour after the long winter.
I have started playing with taking pictures with the iPhone and the fun Hipstamatic app. Immediate, ugly in cool sort of way images. But when you can not crop the images afterwards (the frame around the photo prevents it) you need to think a bit more about finding the right angle. Not always a disadvantage.

Over Easter I visited mrs mjn's grandmother far out in the Polish countryside. The spring weather was lovely and I took several long walks across the fields.

Idag var jag ute och cylkade längs Wał Zawadowski, som är vallen längs Wisła som skall skydda mot översvämningar. Det är en trevlig cykelsträcka. Då och då ser man sådana här skyltar på vallen. Jag antar att det är någon form av kilometermärke, men vet inte säkert.

Today I was out bicycling along Wal Zawadowski, which is the embankment along the Vistula to protect against flooding. It is a nice bike route. Now and then you see these signs on the route. I guess there is some form of kilometer mark, but I am not completely sure.

Tatrabergen på vintern

Kom just hem från några dagars vintervandring i Tatrabergen. Den här bilden är tagen första dagen just när solen försvinner ner bakom bergen. De följande dagarna var övervägande dimmiga och bjöd inte på så många fotomöjligheter.

Just came home from a few days of winter hiking in the Tatra mountains. This picture is taken on the first day, just as the sun disappears behind the mountains. The next few days were mostly foggy and thus much less photogenic.

Złota 44

Dagens bild visar ett av finanskrisens offer - Daniel Libeskinds luxuösa lägenhetskomplex Złota 44. Arbetet på det 192 m höga huset avbröts i mars 2009 och vad som är kvar är ett 17 våningar högt betongskelett.

Today's picture shows one of the victims of the finace crisis - Daniel Libeskind's luxurios apartment complex Złota 44. The work on the 192m high building was aborted in march 2009 and what is left now is a 17 floor high concrete skeleton.

Ursäkta för bristen på aktivitet här. Finns det fortfarande någon som tittar på bilder här? I alla fall, när det är minus 20 och man fryser fingrarna av sig är det inte så lockande att bära ut kameran. Men jag passade i alla fall på att leka lite med mina nya mellanringar, i brist på ett riktigt makroobjektiv. Fler exempel på Flickr.

Sorry about the lack of activity here lately, but when it's minus 20 and one freezes the fingers off when photographing taking out the camera is not high on the list of priorities. Brittiska hus

Dagen bild är en rad med hus i Edinburgh. I god brittisk standard med avloppsrören på utsidan, även om det bara syns på något hus här. De flesta hade dem på andra sidan.

Today's picture is a row of houses from Edinburgh. In typical British manner they all have the plumbing on the outside even if it's only visible on a few of them here.

Göteborg

Fångade en härlig solnedgång, klockan 15.30, över Göteborgs hamn under mellandagarna. Det var kallt - runt 12 minus och blåste på bron. Trots det var jag inte ensam om att fota just där, just då. Jag mötte två andra fotografer uppe på bron. Det var svårt att hålla kameran stilla mot räcket för tre bilder till HDR i kylan och blåsten så bilderna blev lite vridna mot varandra och det gjorde att jag tvingades beskära bilden mer än jag ville.

Captured a lovely sunset, at 15:30, over Göteborg harbour between Christmas and New Year. The temperature was about -12 and it was windy on the bridge, but despite this I was not alone to take pictures there and then. I met two more photographers on the bridge. The wind and the cold made it hard to hold the camera still against the handrail - no tripod - during the three images needed for the HDR so unfortunately they were somewhat misaligned. This forced me to crop the image a little more than I had wanted.

Julbelysningen i vårt lokala shoppingcenter. En vakt kom och frågade barskt om jag hade fototillstånd och krävde att jag skulle radera mina foton. Jag spelade dum och förstod inte polska utan stoppade jag kameran och gick därifrån. Vakten försökte protestera men gjorde inget. Jag fattar inte varför man inte får fota. Och jag kollade extra noga efteråt - det finns inga skyltar som talar om att ett sådant förbud finns.

The christmas lights in our lokal shopping-centre. A guard came and asked if I had permission to take pictures and then demanded that I delete my photos. I pretended not to understand what he said and packed the camera and walked away. He tried to protest, but didn't do anything. I don't understand why it is forbidden to take photos and I checked thoroughly afterwards, and there are no signs informing about such a restriction.

En typisk kiosk i Polen; ett minimalt hål, så lågt att man måste buga sig framåt är enda öppningen för att kommunicera med försäljaren. Alla fönster är vanligen täckta till sista kvadratmillimetern med cigaretter och tidningar.

A typical Polish kiosk; a minute hole, placed so low one must bow to see anyone, is the only opening for communicating with the sales person. All windows are usually covered, to the last square millimetre with ciggarettes and magazines.

Tillbaka i Warszawa efter en konferens i närheten av Kraków. Konferensutflykten gick till saltgruvan i Wieliczka som står med på UNESCO's världsarvslista. Den här bilden är från det stora St. Kingas kapell.

I am back in Warsaw after a conference outside Cracow. The conference excursion went to the salt mine in Wieliczka which is an item on the UNESCO world heritage list. This picture is from the large St. Kinga's chapel.

I går var alla helgons dag och tusentals lyktor och blomsteruppsättningar pryder polska kyrkogårdar. Här en bild från min lokala kyrkogård igår kväll.

Yesterday was all saints day and thousands of lamps and flowers are decorating Polish cemetaries. Here is a picture from my local cemetary yesterday evening.

Pole Mokotowskie

Nu när solen tittade fram efter ett par veckors gråväder så kan jag bjuda på ytterligare en orange höstbild. Den här gången från Pole Mokotowskie, den stora parken i centrala Warszawa som utmärker sig genom att faktiskt tillåta att man beträder gräsmattorna.

As the sun finally appeared again after weeks of grey I can offer another orange autumn photo. This time from Pole Mokotowskie, the large park in central Warsaw that distinguishes itself by actually allowing people to step on the grass.

Den polska gyllene hösten

I Polen talar man om den gyllene hösten, Polska złota jesień. Vi var i Białowieża i helgen för att se alla kulörerna. Men regn och dimma gjorde att det var mer grådaskig än gyllene. Några ögonblick sprack solen fram och jag kunde få ett par bra bilder. Här en mycket sällan använd smalspårig järnväg genom skogen.

There is an expression in Poland about the golden autumn, Polska złota jesień. We went to Białowieża to see the forest in all its colourful glory, but rain and fog made it more grey than golden. However, a few moments of sun lifted the fog and let me have at least a few good pictures. Here a rarely used narrow-track railroad makes its way through the forest.

Förutom rören som leder in på baksidan av en läkemedelsfabrik ser man mer eller mindre nedgångna bostadshus i vad som annars är ett ganska sunkigt industriområde. Bilden taget med ett lånat fisheye-objektiv anpassat för APS-C-sensorstorlek. Därav den svarta ramen.

Except the pipes leading into the pharmaceutical factory one can see more or less direlict residential houses located in a rather seedy industrial area.

En blek höstsol

The pale autumn sun barely reaches through the clouds. The wind is icy and all the skirts and bare arms are gone. Until next year.

Under kungliga slottet

De nyligen öppnade Arkady Kubickiego under kungliga slottet i Warszawa. Ursprungligen som del av det kungliga residenset, sedan omvandlat till stall skall den nu tjänstgöra som utställnings- och möteslokaler. Nu är det i princip tomt... men inträde måste man betala ändå.

The newly opened Arkady Kubickiego under the Royal Palace in Warsaw. Built as a part of the royal residences the arcade was later turned into stables and will now serve as space for exhibitions and meetings. Presently it is empty, but you still have to pay full fee to enter.

Ale stenar

Jag hade inte sett stenarna tidigare och jag måste säga att de är imponerande där de ligger, högt över havet. Det blåste ordentligt när jag var där och himlen bjöd på låga moln som gjorde himlen lite mer dramatisk.

The Ale stenar are very impressive where they stand high over the sea. It was my first time there and I was happy the sky was laden with low clouds that made it more interesting than boring, plain blue.

Sjön / The Lake

Jeziorko Czerniakowskie ligger alldeles här i närheten. En liten sjö med en liten strand mitt i stan. Med utsikt över ett av Polen största kolkraftverk, Elektrociepłownia Siekierki, som drivs av Vattenfall. Tyvärr har sjön de senaste åren haft för höga halter av bl.a. E. coli och bad varit förbjudet, vilket naturligtvis många struntar i när det är 35 grader varmt.

Jeziorko Czerniakowskie lies very close to our home. It's a small lake with a small beach in the middle of the city. And it has a view over one of Poland's largest coal power plants, Elektrociepłownia Siekierki, which is run by Swedish Vattenfall. Unfortunately the last few years the levels of e.g. E Coli, has been to high in the lake and bathing is prohibited. However, when the temperature is well above 30°C not many care.
